At least 1 out of every 10 cancer patients will experience acute kidney injury and up to 25% will have chronic kidney disease. Cancer is a common global problem, and as cancer treatments evolve, the nephrologist will be tasked with diagnosing and managing more complex cases within this subgroup of patients. The 2022 Onco-Nephrology Symposium will offer up to date information and insights from national and international experts in this constantly evolving subspecialty. This goal of this forum is to provide an opportunity for academicians and clinicians to have personal exchanges with experts in this steadily expanding sub-specialty in order to enhance the clinical experience of our cancer patients. This symposium is intended for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students and other healthcare professionals in Hospital Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Oncology.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Recognize and treat electrolyte disorders in patients with cancer
• Diagnose the common renal complications arising from cancer and its treatments
• Prevent or treat nephrotoxicity associated with cancer
• Explain the complexities of managing patients with immunotherapy-associated acute kidney injury
• Discuss up-and-coming treatments in the oncology world
• Identify biomarkers for stem cell transplant-associated kidney disease, and pathologic findings on kidney biopsy
• Summarize the roles of nephrologists and other members of the care team in cancer

Call for Abstracts

The 2022 Onco-Nephrology Symposium invites the submission of abstracts relating to clinical care of patients with cancer and kidney disease. The objective is to stimulate discussion on the evaluation and management of kidney injury in patients with cancer. The type of research can be qualitative and/or quantitative and have a focus in basic science, clinical research, public health or epidemiology. Authors may submit abstracts of completed work or work in progress within the past 12 months. Submission deadline: August 15, 2022. 

Abstract submission and poster session participation is optional for on-site attendees only. This is an informal non-CME activity presented during lunch, and copies of submitted abstracts will be posted on our website. Please submit abstracts to sgupta21@bwh.harvard.edu.
