This course is an interdisciplinary and interprofessional education activity to update the primary care physician about the newest developments and state-of-the-art neurosurgery practice. This course is also relevant for any subspecialty working closely with neurosurgery: critical care, pain medicine, ENT, emergency medicine, and ACS. This course is designed to be interactive and case-based, and the content is relevant to day-to-day care for our patients. Nurses, APPs, physical and occupational therapists, and speech therapists are encouraged to attend.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• List new developments and state-of-the-art treatments for neurosurgical conditions (brain and spine) available at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
• Describe signs and symptoms of urgent neurosurgical conditions.
• Interpret incidental imaging findings of the brain and spine and their urgency.
• Evaluate the need for operative versus conservative treatment for axial back pain.
• List special considerations for treating elderly patients with TBI.
• Generate a differential diagnosis of the most common neurosurgical conditions.
• Create an action plan to improve communication skills between neurosurgery and primary care in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
