In the United States and around the world, health care is big business. From providers to drug and device manufacturers, insurers to those developing new technologies and services, there are many ways that for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations participate in this sector of the economy. Clinician leaders must understand their industry, their organization’s place in it, and how they contribute to the success of their organizations so they can be more effective in their roles. These are key questions for any health care leader to answer - without an understanding of their organization’s focus and their role in it, it is impossible to develop and implement a successful business strategy.

To this end, the first two modules of the course introduce frameworks for quantifying the value created by products or services and how to capture a portion of that value, and for evaluating the threats and opportunities in an industry. The third module discusses the benefits of competition and how regulators seek to preserve it, while the fourth focuses on how organizations in different parts of the health care industry interact, and the conditions under which these organizations may consider integration.
